MANGALORE, NOV. 25. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) is equipped to provide all types of bandwidth to information technology (IT) companies that are willing to set up units in Mangalore, K. Balakrishnan, Chief General Manager, Southern Telecom Region, Chennai, said here on Thursday.

Addressing a function organised by the BSNL to present Sanchar Seva Padak and Bharat Sanchar Sarathi Awards for 2004 and Sub-Regional Best Station Awards for 2003 here, he said that the authorities of some IT companies had recently said that they wanted to expand their network outside Bangalore.

They had announced that Mangalore would be their next destination along with Mysore.

The BSNL organised this year's awards function in Mangalore to send a message to IT companies that the company was ready to provide all types of bandwidth and communication facilities to such IT companies, he said.

Prospective hub

Mr. Balakrishnan predicted that Mangalore would be the prospective hub for IT growth. The Southern Region of BSNL, which achieved 99 per cent efficiency in its service, was the first ISO 9001:2000 certified region of BSNL in India. Hence, the BSNL was ready to meet all communication requirements of IT companies.

Currently the Southern Telecom Region of BSNL was maintaining an OFC route of 51,856 km and microwave route of 12,000 km purely for long-distance networks. Out of this 16,000 km of OFC route and 4,441 km of digital microwave systems were in Karnataka.

Target

The Union Communications Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, said that India should have 25 crore telephone connections by 2007. Presently, the country had eight crore telephone connections.

If the 2007 target was to be achieved, the BSNL had to contribute at least 50 per cent of connections to achieve it.

He said that the Southern Telecom Region looked after the operation and maintenance of 12 Level I Trunk Automatic Exchanges of 500 K capacity located in Chennai, Coimbatore, Ernakulam, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, B. Hanumaiah, said that competition in the telecom sector from private players was required to develop efficiency in the service sector.

The former Principal General Manager, Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, K.J. Chacko, said that the future belonged to wireless communication systems.

The service sector should provide customers what they wanted and not impose on them what the sector had.

K. Sudhakar, General Manager, Telecom, Bangalore, and Thirunavukkarasu, General Manager, Udupi, were present on the occasion.
