MADURAI, NOV.25. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, has warned scan centres of stringent action if they are engaged in female foeticide through selective sex determination tests. Presiding over a meeting held at the Collectorate here today, Mr. Raajendiran said girl child was equal to male child and sex discrimination should be avoided. He urged the people to refrain from going for selective sex determination tests and said scans were meant to diagnose the growth of foetuses and not to carry out abortions. Sex determination test leading to female foeticide was an offence punishable under law. Those found guilty would be imprisoned upto three years and fined upto Rs.50, 000. The registration of medical practitioners was liable to be cancelled if they were found misusing their scan equipment under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Regulation and Prevention of Misuse Act (1994), he said. The Act stipulated that ultrasound and other techniques should be used to detect foetal abnormalities only.
