MADURAI, NOV.25. The Public Works Department today announced the introduction of turn-system of irrigation in double crop and single crop areas served by the Periyar Main Canal and the Tirumangalam Main Canal from December 1. In a statement, the Periyar-Vaigai Basin Circle Executive Engineer, K. Pandikaruppanan, said the monsoon rain was not up to the mark and hence the insufficient storage in dams. A discharge of 2,400 cusecs would be effected for five days from 6 p.m. on December 1, and the release would be closed for the next four days. He also urged farmers to make use of the available water judiciously.
