Stir for halt to violence against women

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, NOV.25 . Various women rights organisations and members from several non-governmental organisations in Madurai and southern districts, who joined hands under the umbrella of the Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls, chose the International Day Against Violence Against Women, today, to highlight the plight of women and girls who fall victims to diverse forms of violence everyday.

They demanded an immediate halt to the violence perpetrated on women and girls. The activists claimed that women underwent suffering from the womb and this lasted for life and were relentlessly subjected to the pangs of sufferings for no fault of theirs. They sought 50 per cent reservation in jobs and wanted gender equity to be established in society.

The volunteers staged a demonstration in support of their demands at Tamukkam and later formed a human chain from Tamukkam toward the Gandhi Museum to gain public support to end violence against women and girls. Pamphlets on their campaign were distributed to the members of the public on the occasion.

Meenakshi Udith of Campaign Against Female Foeticide, Tamil Nadu, Manohari of Women's Development Resource Centre, Selvi of Ekta Parishad, J. Helen of Non-Formal Education Centre, Gnanam of All India Democratic Women's Association, Raji of CDS, Shenbagavalli of Working Women's Centre and Kameswari of WC were among those who participated in the demonstration and human chain.

A series of meetings and rallies would be conducted from today till December 10 coinciding with the International Human Rights Day. November 30 will be observed as the South Asian Women's Day for Peace, Justice, Human Rights and Democracy. The `Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls' is part of an international campaign.

Earlier, the campaign members paid homage to 10 women who fell a victim to diverse kinds of violence in Madurai district last year by holding lighted candles.
