By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 25. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, presented the annual Pratibha awards for 2004 to toppers of Government examinations and common entrance tests to professional courses at a glittering function at the Lal Bahadur stadium here on Thursday evening.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Reddy related the Darwin's theory of evolution to the stiff competition among present-day students. He said the State Government wanted to make use of scholarship for the all-round development of State.

Cash awards

The Higher Education Minister, P. Venkateswara Rao, said the cash awards this year were being presented to students whose family income was less than Rs. 1 lakh per annum. The decision was taken in the interest of justice to weaker sections.

The School Education Minister, N. Rajyalaxmi, focussed suicide among students unable to cope up with competition. She called for promotion of competitive spirit among them from childhood.

Noted educationist, Chukka Ramaiah, called for setting up of schools of excellence in rural areas for the benefit of weaker sections. He regretted the lack of conceptual knowledge among students at the secondary education level because science was not taught with the aid of laboratories.

The Social Welfare Minister, D.S. Redya Naik, also spoke.
