Exhibition to mark Salar Jung anniversary

HYDERABAD, NOV. 25. Salar Jung Museum (SJM) is celebrating the 119th birth anniversary of its founder Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Bahadur Salar Jung III, which will be inaugurated by the Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, at the museum premises on Saturday.

As part of the celebrations, the museum is organising a special exhibition and a three-day national seminar on `Sufism'. The exhibition will have rare artefacts, manuscripts and photographs from Iran, Syria and Egypt dating back to the 14th Century on display, according to the museum Director, A. K. V. S. Reddy.

The photos of famous dargahs will also be displayed and the exhibition will be open to public from November 28 to December 12. The other events lined up for the celebrations include Mushaira, Kavi Sammelan and Qawwali, Mr. Reddy informed.

New galleries

Two more galleries dedicated to French and Porcelain have been readied by the museum.

The French Gallery houses a variety of French objects collected by Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Bahadur and includes fine examples of furniture and other works of art perfected in France during the periods of Bourbon Emperors and Napoleon.

A copy of the famous masterpiece of Louis XVth writing table and other objects such as French silver, ivory, painting, bronze are also included in the display list.

About 175 porcelain objects have been shifted from the old gallery and about 414 new objects have been added for the new Porcelain Gallery.

The display includes English porcelain, Wedgwood pottery from England, Vienna porcelain from Austria and a sizeable collection of Dresden porcelain from Germany.
