Row over surgery tables takes ugly turn

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 25. The Medical College Hospital authorities and the Dental College surgery wing engaged in an open spat on Thursday morning over the issue of the Dental College not being allowed to perform surgeries in the renovated major operation theatre `A' of the MCH.

Four maxillofacial surgeries had been posted for Thursday, but the MCH authorities maintained that these could be conducted only in the emergency `C' Theatre. The Dental College authorities insisted that elective surgeries could not be performed in the emergency theatre because of increased chances of infection and demanded that they be allowed a table in the `A' Theatre.

With the MCH Surgery Department refusing to give tables, there were unruly scenes in front of the `A' Theatre. The MCH Superintendent and the Principal were called into resolve the issue and finally, one of the surgery units allotted to the Plastic Surgery Department, that was being kept locked, was allotted to the Dental College authorities.

However, only one surgery could be performed, Dental College authorities said. "The second patient could not be operated upon as the excessive delay in correcting the fracture had resulted in faulty bone-setting. A tracheostomy has to be performed on him next week and the facial bones re-fractured before the problem can be set right," according to a dental doctor. Dental College authorities alleged that many of the surgery units in `A' Theatre were under lock and key. Even when no surgeries were being performed here, the rooms were being kept locked, denying access to other departments as well as the Dental College, they alleged.
