Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, NOV.25. The Congress which is at the helm of affairs in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is trying to while away time saying that the Bank loan would take care of all the important infrastructure projects that were in the proposal stage, according to the Communist Party of India(Marxist) floor leader, Ch.Babu Rao. At a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Babu Rao said an emergency general body meeting was held on October 23 to prepare a resolution forwarding VMC's proposals to the State Government. The elected representatives were told that a World Bank team would visit the city soon. That was the last the elected representatives heard of the proposals. One month had passed and there was no further information on the issue. The term of the general body would expire in March, but the Congress party was indifferent to the pending projects. The general body approved a resolution for the construction of an underground drainage system in One Town at an estimated cost of Rs. 62 crores. The proposal for the underground drainage was pending since 1999.
World Bank linkage
Similarly, the construction of underground drainage in Krishna Lanka and improvement of several slums and the formation of road in place of the Satyanaryanapuram railway line that was recently removed were now being linked to the World Bank loan. No effort was being made to allocate funds from internal resources or to seek assistance from domestic financial institutions like HUDCO or get grants for the projects directly from the State Government.
