WASHINGTON, NOV. 26. Democrats in the Senate and liberal groups are getting ready to challenge the nomination of the next Attorney-General, Alberto Gonzales, and much of this comes by way of his role in policy formulations that led eventually to the prison abuses in Iraq. More generally lawmakers and liberal groups also want to know what exactly his role had been in the war on terrorism. The expectation is that some of the nominations of the U.S. President, George W Bush, to serve in his second term may be heading up to Congress when it comes back from the Thanksgiving recess on December 6; and the thinking is that some confirmations could be expected before the 108th session closes out formally. No official schedules have been posted yet. Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have made statements of support to Mr. Gonzales and his confirmation by the full Senate is expected, but this does not mean it is going to be easy.
