KOLKATA, NOV. 26. Arun Mariba Shetty, riding CJ-15, lived up to the expectations in the first National show jumping trials for the 2006 Doha Asian Games at Pat Williamson Ground here on Friday. Shetty, representing Mysore Mounted Police, kept a clean sheet turning out clear rounds successively in Round `A' and `B'. He also had the best timing among the pack and was joined by Capt. N.S. Sandhu of National Defence Academy the only other rider to incur zero penalties after two rounds. Sandhu, riding Ruffian, outdid Shetty in the first round. Both the riders had flawless jumpings over a set of 12 fences having two combinations of a double fence and a triple fence but the NDA officer had a better timing of 84.92 sec (out of the stipulated time of 90 seconds) compared to 86.34 sec by the latter. The second round saw a reversal of roles and Shetty, a final year student of NIE, Mysore, showed his mettle scoring another clear round and cut his time by at least six seconds in different hurdles. Sandhu too did a clear round but fell back on time netting 81.27 sec. Shetty and Sandhu were thus tied for the first position as the judges did not name a clear winner. The remaining five positions went to Dafr Mal Chand (on Gold Finger), S.G. Mariba Shetti (on RE-5), Ris. J.P. Masih (on Mast Mowla), Dfr. Shivaji Punia (on Moon Flower) and J.P. Masih (on Multan), respectively. The next show jumping trials will be held at Bangalore from December 20 to 22, while the third and fourth trials will be held at Jaipur (February 3 and 4) and Meerut (March 24 to 30) respectively. There will be trials also for Dressage, Endurance and Eventing at separate venues.
