KOLAR, NOV. 26. Sri Prasanna Madhava Tirtha Swami of Thambihalli Mutt said on Thursday that criminals would get bail easily, but a religious leader of the stature of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam was being denied bail. Addressing presspersons at the mutt, he said that it was unfortunate that the Tamil Nadu Government had acted in haste. He claimed that the police arrested the swamiji without providing him an opportunity to speak to his advocates. He urged the Tamil Nadu Government to take steps to release the swamiji. Criticising the police for accusing the swamiji of planning to flee to Nepal, Sri Madhava Tirtha Swami questioned how a person with `Z' category protection could leave the country without the knowledge of the Centre. Sri Jayendra Saraswathi was made a scapegoat in the political tussle between the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief, M. Karunanidhi, he charged.
