Kashmir, Palestine issue ripe for resolution: Musharraf

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, NOV. 26. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf has said that the Kashmir and Palestine disputes were "absolutely ripe for resolution."

Gen. Musharraf told reporters here before leaving on a two-week trip to Latin America that he would discuss the need to resolve the Palestine and Kashmir disputes in his talks with the leaders of the U.S., U.K. and France during visit to their countries.

This is the first time that Gen. Musharraf has spoken explicitly about the Kashmir issue being ready for resolution and joined it with the Palestine problem. In recent weeks, he had spoken only about the Palestine problem. Since articulating his thesis of "enlightened moderation", which calls upon Muslim countries to curb extremist tendencies, Gen. Musharraf has said that the other side of his theory called for countries such as the United States to play a proactive role in the resolution of political disputes involving Muslims.

Gen. Musharraf has argued that lack of political resolution abetted extremism and terrorism in the Muslim world."This is the time that the second prong of enlightened moderation, the resolution of political disputes must start. We have to resolve them (Palestine and Kashmir disputes), that will bring considerable stability in the world," Gen. Musharraf said.

On the first leg of his trip, the Pakistan leader will visit the Latin American States of Brazil, Argentina and Mexico where, he said, his discussion would focus on increasing economic and trade ties with these countries.
