Thousands offer Pongala at Chakkulathukavu

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, NOV 26 . The annual Karthika Pongala festival was celebrated with religious fervour at the Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy Temple at Nerettupuram, near Thiruvalla, today.

Thousands of women thronged the temple premises to offer the Pongala Nivedyam, the `payasam' offering, to the presiding deity.

The preparations for the Pongala began at 9 a.m. with the temple chief priest, Radhakrishnan Namboodiri, transferring the sacred fire from the sanctum sanctorum to the specially prepared hearth at the temple precincts.

The fire was then transferred to thousands of fireplaces set up along the Thiruvalla-Kallissery stretch of the M.C. Road, Edathua-Thiruvalla Road and Podiyadi-Mannar Road.

The ritual began with the customary prayers at the temple this morning.

Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party State president, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, formally inaugurated the festival by lighting a ceremonial lamp.

Karthika Sthambhom

The Karthika Sthambhom, a holy pyre, was lit by K. Madhavan, Managing Director of Asianet, at 6.30 p.m.

A cultural meeting was also held on the temple premises in the evening.
