THRISSUR, NOV. 26. The commitment of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee treasurer C.N. Balakrishnan to the party should be an example for other members, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, said. Inaugurating a meeting here on Friday to felicitate Mr. Balakrishnan on his 70th birthday, Mr. Chandy said that Mr. Balakrishnan had never encouraged activities that would have destabilised the party. "The strength of the party has been his major concern. He never craved for power," Mr. Chandy said. The Chief Minister recalled Mr. Balakrishnan's work in the cooperative and khadi sectors. The Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran said that no leader was more important than the party. "Mr. Balakrishnan had always upheld this rule. He was denied a ticket in the previous Assembly elections, much to the disappointment of his friends and supporters. But Mr. Balakrishnan accepted the party's decision and continued his work, setting an example to other leaders," Mr. Sudheeran said. The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, the Forest Minister, K.P. Viswanathan, the Civil Supplies Minister, Adoor Prakash, the KPCC president, Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, the vice-president, A.C. Jose, the Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, K. Sankaranarayanan, C.P. Mohammed, MLAs, and the president of the District Congress Committee, M.P. Bhaskaran Nair, were among those present on the occasion. Earlier, Mr. Therambil Ramakrishnan laid the foundation for the C.N. Balakrishnan Sapthathi Samskarika Nilayam at Muthuvara here.
