Regupathy promises help to set up rheumatology centres

CHENNAI, NOV. 26. The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, S. Regupathy, today promised that he would take up with the Cabinet the issue of setting up more centres that will offer D.M. speciality in rheumatology.

It was surprising that there were only two centres offering D.M. Speciality in rheumatology and immunology in India, Mr. Regupathy said. Inaugurating IRACON 2004, 20th annual conference of the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA) here, the Minister promised the audience, consisting largely of rheumatologists and orthopaedicians, that he would take up the matter with his ministerial colleagues. He hoped that soon, every hospital in the country would have a rheumatology department. Earlier, the Minister presented the Dr. M.N. Parsee Distinguished Services Award to rheumatologists S. Sachdev from Delhi and K.M. Mahendranath from Bangalore.

The Vice-Chancellor, Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research, E. Munirathinam Naidu, released a souvenir and members directory and handed over the first copy to the Minister.

The IRA president, U.R.K. Rao, emphasised the importance of exploring new avenues of treatment in rheumatology.

The IRA secretary, Rohini Handa, presented the association's annual report and complimented the organising secretary, V. Krishnamurthy, on putting together IRACON 2004.
