Innovative ways for power generation

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 26. Solar panels fitted on barges was among the innovative ideas which came up on the final day of the sixth national seminar on "Modern trends in power engineering and development" organised by the KSEB Post-Graduate Engineers Association here today.

In a paper presented, G. Pavithran, Deputy Chief Engineer, KSEB, said if such barges were positioned in the reservoirs of dams, the power generated could make up for the loss caused by the evaporation of water to a large extent. They need very limited space only, Dr. Pavithran added.

K. K. Karappankutty, Chief Engineer, spoke on the modern methods of tunnel construction. M. K. Parameswaran Nair, former member, KSEB spoke on the pros and cons of linking rivers, M. Jayaraju on the need for making the construction and repair of transmission lines more efficient and Partharadha on the technology for generating power from solid waste. Some 15 papers were presented on the second day. They dealt with several innovative methods for generating power and using the power generated without any loss. The organisers propose to bring out a volume of the proceedings. The copies of it would be presented to the State Government and major centres of research and studies in the country and abroad.
