MANGALORE, NOV. 27. The second edition of "Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi," a national-level concert competition organised as part of "Sangeethotsava 2004" got underway here on Friday. Seven young artistes from across south India are participating in this two-day event. Five artistes performed on the opening day. The competition has been organised by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore, and Sangeetha Parishat, Mangalore. According to the president of parishat, Ganesh Karnik, the quality of concerts held on the opening day was outstanding. He had special praise for the performances of Ashok S. and Hariharan M.B. as well as Vinaya Sharava S.R. of Bangalore. The others who performed on Saturday include Uday Kiran K.T. of Mysore, K. Gayathri of Chennai, and P. Prarthana Rao of Mangalore. Meghana Moorthy Balnad of Puttur and Kottapalli Vandanam of Vishakapatnam will perform on Sunday. The seven finalists were chosen based on their performances at the preliminary rounds held in five cities in south India. Mr. Karnik said there was a change in the format of the competition this year and finalists were chosen based on performances in the preliminary rounds. This year, the organisers conducted preliminary rounds at Mangalore, Bangalore, Trissur, Chennai and Kakinada and chose nine contestants for the final round.
