HASSAN, NOV. 27. The Deputy Conservator of Forests, S. Shekar, has announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the next of kin of the farmer, Ponnappa (46), who was crushed to death by a rogue elephant in Sulugodu Somavara village of Konanur hobli in Arkalgud taluk recently. According to police, a herd of nine elephants, which was chased across the border by the Forest Department officials a few days ago, returned to the area on Wednesday. Officials of the Forest Department tried to scare them away, but an elephant was separated from the herd. It attacked Ponnappa and four others in Sulugodu Somavara village. While the other three escaped, Ponnappa was killed. Farmers in the region have appealed to forest officials to find a permanent solution to the problem as soon as possible as the elephants were destroying their crops.
