ANANTAPUR, NOV. 27. The former Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, on Saturday alleged that the UPA Government at the Centre was neglecting urban housing. He was speaking at a function organised to mark the inaugural of a housing colony at Kadiri in the district. Earlier, the Governor of Sikkim, V. Rama Rao, inaugurated the housing colony (Bangaru Laxman Colony). About 40 families have been provided shelter. Mr. Dattatreya said the previous NDA Government had sanctioned 53,000 houses to the State under Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojna (VAMBAY) last with the 50 per cent subsidy and 50 per cent loan. But, bankers did not come forward to provide loans to the beneficiaries. As a result, only 6,000 houses were completed and another 33,000 were in progress. The remaining could not be grounded due to lack of financial tie up by the bankers, he said.
Plea to Government
He urged the State Government to take the initiative to give loans from the housing corporation to complete the VAMBAY houses. He criticised the State Government for cancelling 2.4-lakh houses sanctioned by the previous Government. The State general secretary of BJP, Naresh, the State general secretary of Dalit Morcha, M. Devanand, the district president of BJP, V. Pundareekaksha Reddy, and others participated.
