PONDICHERRY, NOV. 27. The Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary party leader, M. Ramadass, today criticised the `retrograde economic reforms' introduced some 12 years ago in the country. These reforms have `destabilised the economy.' Addressing delegates of the National Federation of Insurance Field Workers of India (Vellore Division) on the occasion of the federation's special general body meeting here, he said bringing in private players through the backdoor would disturb the working of the Life Insurance Corporation and no renowned public sector undertaking should face the risk of destabilisation. Asserting that development officers (field workers) were the torchbearers of the country's progress, he said he would all steps to ensure their welfare. Asserting that development officers (field workers) of the Life Insurance Corporation were pillars of growth,if welfare of officers was at peril the whole edifice of the corporation would collapse.He said one should not promote negative approach in the garb of economic reforms as welfare of the have-nots should never be jettisoned. He took strong exception to foreign direct investment in crucial sectors like telecom sector and insurance sector.
Unemployment
Referring to the increase in unemployment among the youth in Pondicherry, Mr. Ramadass said he was pained to see that no one was taking care to tackle the problem. He said that there should be introduction of `incentives' linked to productivity. Nearly 200 delegates fromthe Vellore Division of the LIC participated in the deliberations.
