An acid test, says Agnivesh

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 27 . Terming the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, "an acid test" for India's character and its diverse culture, the World Council of Arya Samaj president, Swami Agnivesh, today criticised the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for demanding a "special treatment" for the Acharya.

"Nobody is above the law and the Constitution says that everyone would be treated equally, so all the hue and cry by political leaders over the issue was shameful and shocking," said Swami Agnivesh. It was time the nation debated the issue of "criminalisation of religion."
