Madrassa Education Board

Thiruvananthapuram Nov. 27. The Government has set up a State Madrassa Education Board with the Education Minister as chairman and the Director of Public Instruction as vice-chairman. The other members of the board are the Directors of Higher Secondary and Vocational Higher Secondary Education, Additional Director (Academic) of General Education, Bahauddin Kuriyad, Husssain Randathani, Mohammed Kuttassery, N.K.Abubacker, M.S.Moulavi Kadackal, O. Abdul Rahiman, Thodiyoor Mohammed Kunhi Moulavi and Kunhimohammed Parappoor. The board has been constituted in accordance with the directions of the National Minorities Commission. It is meant for taking steps for the modernisation of madrassas.

MPs' plea to Telecom

Members of Parliament from the State have urged the Telecommunication authorities to take concerted action to clear the waiting list for telephone connections in the Circle. The MPs, who attended a presentation on operational, financial and developmental activities of Kerala Telecom Circle by its Chief General Manager, S.A. Thomas, in Thiruvananthapuram today, said the coverage of cellular mobile phones should be improved and billing complaints redressed. Mr. Thomas promised to take immediate action on these points.

Prizes distributed

The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala, G. Balamohan Thampi, distributed the prizes instituted by the Kerala Gazetted Officers Association for the children of members of the organisation who topped in the SSLC, higher secondary, CBSE and other examinations at a function held in Thiruvananthapuram today. There were 27 recipients, including first prize winners K. Sundar Ram, J. Aravind, Juslin Edison, N. Sashin, D. Sharanyan and Parvathy Kusuman. The president of KGMOA, K.N. Mohanan, was among those who felicitated the prize winners.

College polls on December 17

Elections to the student unions in the colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala will be held on December 17, and not on December 10, as announced earlier. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Syndicate of the university here today. The elections will be conducted as per the directive of the Kerala High Court. The Principal of the college concerned, in consultation with the college council, can decide on the manner in which the elections would be held.

Pharmacists take out rally

The Drugs Controller, T.P. Gopinathan, today stressed that only pharmacists should be allowed to handle medicines. Inaugurating a Pharma rally, organised to mark the conclusion of the National Pharmacy Week celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram, he said this was necessary in order to provide better pharmacy services to the people. He hailed the proposal to open fair price medical stores all over the State. He said the department would extend full support to moves to enforce the salary and service conditions of those working in the community pharmacy area. Pharmacists, pharmacy students and community pharmacy employees participated in the rally.

Train rescheduled

The Thiruvananthapuram-Gorakhpur Rapthisagar Express train scheduled to leave Thiruvananthapuram at 4.45 a.m. tomorrow will leave only at 3 p.m. due to the late running of the incoming pairing train.

Office-bearers elected

R.N. Chaudhary has been elected president of the National Federation of Postal Employees. The other office-bearers are Narayan Chaudhary, working president, P. Suresh, Shankar Prasad Mukherjee and Amaresh Thakur , vice-presidents, C. Chandran Pillai, secretary-general, Des Raj Sharma, deputy secretary general, R.N. Parashar, S. Sundaramurthy and Nirmal Ch Singh, secretaries and Ishwar Singh Dabas, treasurer.

Prohibition council president

THRISSUR NOV. 27. K.K. Rahulan, social activist and writer, has been elected president of the Kerala Prohibition Council. According to a press release here today, Dr. Rahulan, who is former president of the SNDP Yogam and a renowned Gandhian, was unanimously elected to the post at the State committee meeting of the Council. Eyyacheri Kunjikrishnan has been elected secretary of the Council and Jayaprakash Narayanan, Father Thaithottam and Father Mannaraprayil, vice-presidents. M.C. Grace, Chinnama and Verghese Muzhuthett have been elected secretaries while Manin Naroth has been elected treasurer. Soon after the election, Dr. Rahulan announced that the prohibition Council would wage a relentless struggle to press for prohibition in the State in phases as promised by the ruling UDF in its last election manifesto. The Council will hold a vehicle campaign march to press for this demand in December.

Women lecturers plan rally

THRISSUR NOV. 27. A group of women lecturers from various colleges in the district will take out a rally here on December 1 in protest against the rise in attacks on women in the State. According to a press release by the organisers, an initiative of women irrespective of politics, religion and community was needed to counter the growing assault on women. Cultural leaders, writers and students will join the rally, the release said.

Preserve art forms: MT

The Jnanpith winner M. T. Vasudevan Nair has said it is important to preserve the native art forms just like the language in the background of increasing offensive for cultural colonisation. He was speaking after presenting the `Raj Thomas Award' to Satheesh K. Satheesh and the `Devadas Puranattukara Award' to Kalamandalam Easwara Varrier organised by the Sargadhara at Muthuvara near here on Friday. Vysakhan and Vayala Vasudevan Pillai, writers, were among those who spoke on the occasion.

Navy band performance

KOCHI NOV. 27. The Navy Band of the Southern Naval Command will perform at the Durbar Hall Ground here on Monday evening as part of the Navy Week celebrations. The show will begin at 5 p.m. The band, comprising 45 musicians playing instruments such as flute, oboe, clarinet, saxes, cornet, French horn, trombone, timpani, jazz drum, glockenspiel and xylophone, will entertain the public with popular songs from Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi films. The entry will be free.

Annual convention

KOLLAM Nov. 27. The annual convention of the Padre Pio Retreat Centre will be held at the Thillery complex of the Centre here from December 1 to 5. The convention will be from 4.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on all the days. The provincial minister of the Saint Francis Province, Robin Daniel, will inaugurate the convention. The Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop, Susai Pakiyam, the Kollam Bishop, Stanley Roman, and the Auxiliary Bishop of the Thiruvananthapuram Syro-Malabar diocese, Joshua Mar Ignathios, will address the convention on different days.

Christmas celebrations

The 38th united Christmas celebrations being organised by various Christian sects and the YMCA will be held on December 26. The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Friday. The Vicar General of the Kollam Diocese, David Kandathil, was elected chairman of the festival committee. The other office-bearers of the committee are Varghese Philip and V.T. Josson, vice-chairmen, and N.V. Eldo, convener.

Blood donation

KANNUR NOV. 27. Twenty-five cadets from the Government Polytechnic College and 35 cadets from the Sree Narayana College donated blood at the district Government Hospital here today. This was in connection with the National Cadets Corps (NCC) day celebrations. The blood donation campaign by NCC cadets was led by the NCC Officer, O.C. Nithyanandan, and the hospital deputy superintendent, Neena Jayaram.
