KOZHIKODE, NOV. 27 . The Central Excise and Customs officers of the Calicut Commissionerate destroyed six acres of fully grown ganja plantation valued at nearly Rs 11.4 crores in the Agali forest range of Manarkkad forest division on Friday. About 38,000 ganja plants were destroyed in the operation, which began at 7.30 a.m. on Friday. The customs team left its base camp at Sholayar at 3 a.m. and reached the ganja plantation, 20 km inside the forests, at 7.30 a.m. Two persons who were keeping guard over the plantations fled on seeing the team. The action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) was carried out under the direction of B. Syed Mohammed, Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, Calicut Commissionerate, under the supervision of M.V.J. Nair, Joint Commissioner (Preventive). The team consisting of about 30 armed officers and guards was led by K.A. Francis Kodankandath, Superintendent, (CI &IU) of Calicut Commissionerate and C.N. Sankarankutty, Superintendent (Preventive) of Palakkad division.
