OFC station to be commissioned tomorrow

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 27. The Optic Fibre Cable (OFC) Repeater station that was constructed as part of the ongoing Railway electrification project between Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram central stations will be inaugurated on November 29.

The General Manager, Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), C.R. Kalsi, will inaugurate the OFC repeater station at a function at 10 a.m. at the Divisional Railway Office complex, Thycaud. The Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager, G. Narayanan, and top officials will attend.

According to the Railways, an additional benefit of the railway electrification would be the introduction of reliable modern technology communication systems using OFC cables. Already, OFC telecommunication system has been commissioned in the section.

Electrification

Meanwhile, electrification between Ernakulam-Kayamkulam (via both Kottayam and Kayamkulam)- Thiruvananthapuram section is in full swing. Electrification along the 320-km in the section would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 160.17 crores. The stretch consists of three logical groups — Ernakulam-Kottayam-Kayamkulam, Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayamkulam and Kayamkulam-Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram.

Electrification of Ernakulam-Kayamkulam-Thiruvananthapuram stretch via both Kottayam and Alappuzha involved casting of 30,000 cubic metres of concrete erection of about 4,500 tonnes of steel structures and drawing of about 1,400 km of copper conductors as part of the overhead equipment in the entire length of about 320 km.

The overhead equipment had been energised in about 100 kilometres. According to the railways, the electrification of Ernakulam-Kayamkulam section via both Kottayam and Alappuzha will be completed by March 2005. The Kayamkulam-Thiruvananthapuram section is expected to be completed in the next financial year.

As part of electrification of the section, the multiple aspect colour light signal system already existing will be modified to suit 25 kV a.c traction. Works have been completed at 22 out of the 32 railway stations in the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram section.

According to railways, all other major activities connected with electrification like construction of traction sub-stations to feed power to the overhead power line system, lifting of road overbridges and foot overridges, construction of service buildings and additional quarters for the staff are in progress.
