NEW DELHI, NOV. 27 . A large number of Delhi unit Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers held a demonstration near Tis Hazari today by forming a human-chain. They were protesting against the failure of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre to check the hike in prices of essential commodities. They also criticised the Delhi Government for implementing an "anti-social" excise policy and its proposal to introduce professional tax. Later, a party delegation handed over a memorandum to the Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, in this connection. Led by the Delhi BJP president, Harsh Vardhan, and the party's women cell in the Capital, Neera Shastri, the protesters alleged that the Congress had betrayed the people by imposing unnecessary financial burden on them. The increase in prices of fuel and cooking gas had led to hike in costs of all commodities in the market thus making life difficult for those belonging to middle class and poorer sections of society. According to Dr. Vardhan, black-marketing of cooking gas was prevalent on a large-scale and despite paying over Rs.350, people were not able to get LPG cylinders. Similarly, instead of providing potable water to lakhs of households, the Shiela Dikshit Government was ensuring that liquor vends were opened in every corner of the Capital thus not only causing health concerns among citizens but also putting a big question mark over the future of Delhi's youths. The BJP leader also criticised the Congress-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)'s plan to introduce "professional tax" for all working classes as well as the business community. Alleging that the MCD was planning to levy this tax to hide its failure in meeting revenue collection targets, he said the Corporation instead of taxing people should first improve its functioning.
