J.J. Singh, new Army Chief

NEW DELHI, NOV. 27. Lieutenant-General Joginder Jaswant Singh will be the new Army Chief. Lt. Gen. Singh, now the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, will take over from Gen. N.C. Vij, who will retire on January 31next, according to an official release.

A third generation Army officer, Lt.Gen. Singh was born on September 17, 1945 at Bhawalpur, now in Pakistan. He was commissioned into the Maratha Light Infantry on August 2, 1964.

During his distinguished service for four decades, Lt.Gen. Singh has served in several Command and Staff postings. During the 1999 Kargil operations, he was the Additional Director-General of Military Operations. In 1991, he was seriously injured in an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir when he was commanding a Mountain Brigade. Besides being a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Lt. Gen. Singh has done the Senior Command course, the Higher Command course and the prestigious National Defence College course. He has been decorated with the Param Vishist Seva Medal, the Ati-Vishist Seva Medal and the Vishist Seva Medal. He is also one of the Honorary ADCs to the President.

`An honour'

PTI reports:

Lt. Gen. Singh said he was "extremely privileged" to lead the second biggest army in the world and felt "honoured" for the Government's faith in him.

He said it was a matter of pride for the Western Command that he would be the 11th chief from the command to be the Army Chief.

His message to the jawans and officers: "All I can say is that I will work sincerely, follow the examples of my illustrious predecessors and will provide leadership to the force."
