NIZAMABAD, NOV. 27. Construction of martyr columns by the Communist Party of India (Maoist) at several places in Kamareddy division and elsewhere in the district has come to a halt following pressure from the police and denial of permission. Some obelisks have been left half way and a few others, though completed, are yet to be opened. At some other places efforts to construct columns have been foiled by the police in the beginning itself. The Maoists wanted to construct obelisks in a big way in their erstwhile strongholds of Lingampet, Gandhari, Tadvai, Yellareddy, Sadasivnagar, Kamareddy, Sirikonda and Machareddy mandals of the division.
Warnings work
According to sources, naxalite sympathisers and elected representatives, mostly sarpanches, were pressed into service. Traders and businessmen and civil contractors were asked to bear construction cost. But they developed cold feet after the police issued warnings, albeit indirectly. Meanwhile, people in the rural areas, particularly the Yellareddy area where major encounters had taken place earlier, are feeling insecure after the recent exchange of fire between the police and the Maoists in Karimnagar district and naxalite attacks in Adilabad and Mahabubnagar districts.
