Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, NOV. 27. Remember Saleha Ahkter, a Bangladeshi who came to Chennai for cancer treatment? She had undergone surgeries in the hip and the breast in the past one year. She fell short of funds midway but help came from several quarters: college students, a women's group at Tambaram, the owner of a lodging house where she was put up and a hospital. "I am taking back with me lovely memories of Chennai," this college teacher beams. "I am writing a book in Bengali on my experience here. I will make an elaborate mention of all the people I received help from." Having drained her resources undergoing treatment in a popular private hospital near Nungambakkam, she approached Sri Sankara Hospital at Gowrivakkam for subsidised treatment. Her appeals were answered and the hospital charged her one-fourth of the actual costs for a surgery and post-operative care. They hope to return next week after the State Home department cleared their papers. They overstayed their visa period.
