MANGALORE, NOV. 27. The Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Attavar, here will conduct a free diabetes check-up and awareness camp on Sunday, D.P. Saraswat, chief operating officer, KMC Hospitals, has said. In a release on Friday, he said that the check-up would begin at 7 a.m.
Foot examination
Dr. Saraswat said the camp would also include free foot examination with a biothesiometer, free consultation, and demonstration of a few yoga asanas. He said that the theme of the day would be "Focus on diabetes and obesity." According to Prabha Adhikari of the same hospital, diabetes mellitus (DM) is a condition that affects the body's ability to regulate the level of glucose in the blood. In healthy people, the hormone produced by the pancreas, insulin, helps regulate the glucose or blood sugar levels, and its failure leads to diabetes mellitus.
35.5 million patients
Dr. Adhikari said that a national study on diabetes revealed that there were 35.5 million diabetes patients in India. She also said that the study showed that Indians were more prone to develop diabetes than people in the other parts of the world. Diabetes also made the patient more prone to cardiovascular and kidney-related diseases, she added.
