THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 27 . The violent incidents in the City Corporation Council on Friday have evoked sharp reaction from the ruling LDF and the Opposition UDF, with the rival fronts accusing each other of precipitating the clash.
UDF dharna
The DCC president, N. Peethambara Kurup, today inaugurated a dharna in front of the Corporation office to protest against the alleged attempt to manhandle UDF councillors inside the council hall. Vowing to expose the corruption in the Corporation administration, Mr. Kurup accused the Mayor and the LDF leadership of abetting financial irregularities in the purchase of streetlight equipment. The Thiruvananthapuam North MLA, K. Mohankumar, said that the LDF rule in the Corporation was marked by corruption and inefficiency. The UDF council party leader, K. Maheswaran Nair, said that the Opposition would launch a ward-level campaign against the flawed policies of the LDF leadership. The DCC general secretary, V. Prathapachandran, and the councillors M.P. Saju, R. Harikumar, Xavier Lopez and Thampanoor Satish addressed the dharna.
LDF allegation
The LDF parliamentary party today said that the ugly incidents in the council were planned and executed by the UDF to divert attention from two adjournment motions on the move to delink panchayats and the proposed construction of a commercial complex on the land donated for a memorial to the former Chief Minister C.H. Mohammed Koya. In a joint statement issued here, the LDF council party leader, K.C. Vikraman, and the secretary, Kadakampally Mohanan, said that the UDF was driven to violence by the need to avoid embarrassment on both issues. The statement alleged that the UDF was trying to politicise the issue and create trouble in the council with the local body elections in mind.
Special meeting
Meanwhile, the Mayor, J. Chandra, announced a special meeting of the Corporation Council on November 30 to discuss the UDF recommendation to delink the five panchayats that were merged with the city. The meeting will commence at 10.30 a.m.
