BANGALORE, NOV. 27. The November 29 mayoral poll is likely to witness a keen contest between candidates backed by two groups of Congress leaders, one led by the Jayanagar MLA and Bangalore City District Congress Committee (BCDCC) President, Ramalinga Reddy, and the other by the MP, B.K. Hariprasad. While Mr. Reddy's group is backing the HMT ward corporator, Narayanswamy, Mr. Hariprasad's group is making all efforts to get the Malleswaram corporator, B. Muniraju, elected to the top post. Sources in the Congress told The Hindu on Saturday that members of these two groups met separately to discuss and garner support from the other group for their respective candidates. "Mr. Hariprasad and the former MP, C.K. Jaffer Sharief, are doing their best to get a unanimous candidate chosen for the post," the sources said. "As the Congress High Command has the final say over the choice of the candidate, the leaders are trying their best to influence it," they said. Crucial meetings to decide on the candidate and arrive at a consensus would be held at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office on Sunday. Unlike last time, four representatives from the KPCC would gather the opinion about the candidates from the elected representatives individually, the sources said.
