`Navy Week' celebrations at INS Kattabomman

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, NOV.28. The premier communication nerve centre of the Indian Navy, INS Kattabomman at Vijayanarayanam, about 40 km from here, has started this year's `Navy Week Celebrations - 2004' in a big way, which would prove the prowess of the country's `Flag Bearers' across the oceans.

According to Commander K. Prem Kumar, Executive Officer (AOL) for the Commanding Officer, to commemorate the historical event of the resounding victory of the Indian Navy over its adversary in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the Indian Navy celebrates the `Navy Day' on December 4 every year, which clearly explains the growth of the Indian Navy over the years.

As part of these celebrations, INS Kattabomman, which would celebrate the event with the theme of `Striving for excellence in three dimensions', has planned for several impressive programmes, ranging from tree planting and blood donation by the sailors to `helicopter display'.

The first event - blood donation camp by volunteers in the naval base - was held on November 22 and five days later, a multi-speciality medical camp organised by a nine-member specialists from the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital at the naval base for the benefit of its service personnel, civilians and their family members.

"In the outreach programme to be held on December 11 and 12, free meals will be provided to the physically and mentally challenged children of `Mercy Home' near our establishment, Amar Seva Sangam at Aayikudi, and free meals for the people below poverty line at `Narayan Seva' at Vijayanarayanam. Planting of tree saplings will be taken up on the State Highway 89, adjoining our campus on December 8 and 9. Besides allowing the college and school children to see some of our facilities here on December 11 and 12, we have also planned to conduct awareness lectures in schools and colleges, cycle expedition and route marches," he said.

In a bid to create an awareness of AIDS, the sailors would take out a march at Valliyoor on December 1 and visit various educational institutions to deliver lectures on Indian Navy on December 10.

The `Navy Mela', which would be marked by the `helicopter display' on December 11 and the fireworks display the next day, would be the highlights of the celebrations.

"A Navy Day Brochure will be released on December 4, which will highlight the multi-faceted activities of the Indian Navy and INS Kattabomman," Mr. Prem Kumar added.
