THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 28. The Revolutionary Socialist Party (B) State general secretary, A.V. Thamarakshan, was arrested by the Fort police here this afternoon along with four of his supporters in connection with the assault on mediapersons and an activist owing allegiance to the party faction led by the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, on Saturday. The party MLA, Shibu Baby John, was arrested on Saturday midnight in connection with the same incident. The two leaders and four others were granted bail by the Judicial First Class Magistrate 1 later in the evening. Police sources said charges of attempt to murder and unleashing violence were framed against the two leaders and 200 others who gathered here to stall a meeting of the other faction. The party faction led by Mr. Divakaran had already cancelled the meeting on the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy's intervention. A rival faction leader who came to the venue was manhandled by the activists. Cameramen shooting the incident also came under attack in which five of them were injured.

Later in the evening, journalists who staged a protest march to the RSP(B) office were taken into custody on the charges of attacking the police and detained till 12.30 a.m. today leading to a tense situation. When senior leaders of major political parties, including the ruling Congress, reached the venue and expressed solidarity with the mediapersons, the police were forced to withdraw the charge and release them unconditionally. The arrest of Mr. John came simultaneously. He was later admitted to a hospital after he cited health reasons. Prof. Thamarakshan reached the party office at Chettikulangara around 2 p.m. along with Prem Sudha, Thoppil Saji, Rajasekharan Nair and Kilimanoor Chandrababu. A police contingent was deployed in front of the office to prevent untoward incidents much before their arrival. On arriving at the office, Prof. Thamarakshan made an attempt to talk to the media and apologised for the assault on mediapersons. A small group of party activists which assembled there raised slogans in support of Prof. Thamarakshan and the alleged attempt to isolate him. Then he was arrested by a police team. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today promised strong action against those attacking mediapersons.
