MANGALORE, NOV. 28. Kottapalli Vandana, a post-graduate in music from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, won the first prize in the finals of the national level "Ragam, tanam and pallavi" Carnatic vocal competition, organised jointly by the Sangeetha Parishat, Mangalore, and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here on Sunday. The award carries Rs. 10,000 in cash, a citation, a certificate and a shawl. Noted Carnatic vocalist R.K. Srikantan presented the award.
Other participants in this year's finals, Udaya Kiran K.T. of Mysore, P. Prarthana Rao of Mangalore, K. Gayathri of Chennai, Meghana Murthy of Puttur, Vinaya Sharva S.R. of Bangalore and Bangalore brothers (Ashok S. and Hariharan M.B.) were given away Rs. 1,000 and a certificate. Ms. Vandana, who passed out of the university a year ago, is the disciple of Manda Sudha Rani and a "B high" grade artiste of All India Radio. Besides, she had won several awards earlier. Vandana won a gold medal (first prize) in the "Ragam, tanam and pallavi" concert competition organised by the Yoga Ganapathi Music Circle, Visakhapatnam, in 1999. She also won the Kala Bharati Annual Memorial Award by Visakha Music and Dance Academy in 1999, Kurella Sita Mahalakshmi Memorial Award from SITA Music and Dance Academy Trust, Visakhapatnam, in 1998, Sri Rangam Gopala Ratnam Award by Sangeetha Kala Samithi, Visakhapatnam, and Durvasula Bhagavanulu Memorial Gold Medal by Vijaya Tyagaraja Sangeetha Sabha, Visakhapatnam.
