Proposal to Govt. on water release

By Our Staff Reporter

ERODE, NOV. 28 . Proposals have been sent to the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu through the Government for the release of water in Kalingarayan, Thadapalli and Arakkankottai from December 1 for irrigation, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said.

During the agriculturists' grievances day at the Collectorate today, he said that case on water release in Lower Bhavani Project and other canals including the Kalingarayan Canal was pending at the Madras High Court. Farmers of Kalingarayan, Thadapalli and Arakkankottai demanded that water be released in the canals for the second turn crop.

The Collector said that an amicable solution could be arrived at on water sharing if the farmers withdrew cases on the same.

Turn system

The president of the Lower Bhavani Project Ryots Association, C. Nallasamy, urged the Collector to order extension of water supply in the LBP Canal till January 15, as water had not reached tail-end areas.

The Collector replied that proposals were already sent to the Government for the extension of water supply till January 10 and implementation of turn system in the LBP Canal from December 1. When several farmers demanded that Paddy Procurement Centres be opened at all ayacut areas, the Collector said that it was decided to start seven centres in the district (one at every taluk headquarters).

Recommendations were sent to the Government for one more centre at Thookanaickkenpalayam.

Turmeric market

To a question by the president, Athikadavu Farmers Association, Samiappan, on forming turmeric markets, the Collector said that the Turmeric Merchants Association had purchased a site near Nasiyanure for the turmeric market that would be handed over to the Government.

Pest attack

The president of the Thadapalli Arakkankottai Farmers Association, K.A. Eswaran, said that NABARD had given its consent for developing Thadapalli and Arakkankottia Canals, and sought the consent of the Public Works Department. He said that sugarcane production was affected due to pest attack.

Officials of the Agriculture Department said that the pest had migrated from Maharashtra through Karnataka, and all efforts were on to control the same.
