By Ramesh Susarla

GUNTUR, NOV. 28. The second major irrigation project in Guntur district --Varakapudisila Lift Irrigation -- will be a reality in the coming days with the State Government making genuine efforts to ground the Rs.150-crore project soon.

A special irrigation division has been created and Divisional Engineer posted through a Government Order and study for preparation of the detailed project report initiated.

A couple of days ago the project was reviewed by the Minister with the SE and CE of Irrigation Department to give the major lift irrigation project a shape.

The intention of the State Government gets reflected in the efforts put in by the Minister from the district, Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, taking pains to visit the actual project site though the terrain was difficult. The Chief Minister had given a go-ahead at the Vinukonda meeting in Guntur district on November 19.

Site location

Mr. Lakshmi Narayana got the way cleared up to the proposed project site, 15 km from Sirigiripadu making it possible for a four-wheel drive vehicle to reach two-km short of the site. The Minister made it to the site with irrigation officials covering the remaining 2 km on foot.

The Minister for Cooperation told The Hindu on Sunday that Pulichintala and Varakapudisila projects would be completed during the five-year tenure of the YSR Government giving major boost to the irrigation potential in the district.

42,000 acres ayacut

The Nagarjunasagar project back waters come into a two km-long gorge in a hill-range with a depth of 500 feet making it possible to lift water from a depth of 300 feet, he said. The engineers would study the finer aspects of designing the project, but it had a potential to irrigate 42,000 acres in 65 villages in five mandals.

Farmers of the Durgi, Veldurthy and Bollapalli, mandals had been asking for this project for more than a decade.
