Rajat Bhatia's day out

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 28. Rajat Bhatia scored an unbeaten century as Delhi kept Railways on the field right through the fourth and final day of their Ranji Trophy Elite group league match at the Jamia Millia ground here on Sunday.

After taking the first innings lead on Saturday morning, Delhi chose to bat out the remaining period and eventually gained two points from this drawn encounter.

Delhi, after three matches, has six points. It meets Madhya Pradesh here in the next round commencing on December 4. Railways, with two points from three outings, plays host Gujarat.

The final day's proceedings followed an expected course with the Delhi batsmen using the time and opportunity to indulge in some batting practice.

For the record, Delhi resumed the day at 101 for one and finished at 395 for four.

Bhatia, overnight on 14, remained unconquered with 157 inclusive of two sixes and 12 boundaries.

Shikhar Dhawan, who started the day at 55, missed his maiden century when he was bowled by left-arm spinner G. Shankar Rao for 87. Dhawan's dismissal ended the 100-run second-wicket stand.

Undeterred, Bhatia continued to make the most of some very friendly bowling by Railways. With young wicketkeeper Varun Kumar (54), Bhatia raised another 105 runs for the third wicket.

Once the non-regular bowlers were pressed into service, Bhatia was associated in stands of over 50 runs each with Abhinav Bali and Amit Bhandari before the match was called off, through the mutual consent of the captains, after five mandatory overs.
