CUDDALORE, NOV. 28. The Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University, L.B. Venkatrangan, has announced that following the indefinite closure of the university (owing to the death of a third-year engineering student, G. Sivasakthi, reportedly due to brain fever), the examinations to various courses have been rescheduled from November 23 to December 3. The regular classes and examinations (both forenoon and afternoon sessions) for various faculties would commence as follows: Faculties of medicine, dentistry and fine arts December 3; faculties of arts, science, Indian languages, education and agriculture (first semester classes, including research) December 3; for senior classes (in these faculties) the examinations would be held from December 3. For faculties of engineering and technology (first semester B.E., M.E., M. Tech., B. Pharm., M. Pharm., and D. Pharm) December 16; and for senior classes (in these faculties) the examinations would be held from December 3.
Stir plan shelved
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff of Annamalai University that met here today unanimously decided to put off its fasting in a public place at Chidambaram, scheduled for Monday. The JAC in a statement issued here noted that since the management had decided to reopen the university and commence the examinations on December 3, it had shelved its agitational programme "in the interests of the student community." The JAC members had earlier decided to observe a day's fasting on Monday to protest against violence on the campus (subsequent to the student's death) and the attempt of certain elements to capitalise on it.
