Mould children, teachers told

PUDUKOTTAI, NOV. 28. Teachers who had received Dr. Radhakrishnan Award were honoured at the Teachers Day celebrations held here yesterday.

The Fisheries Minister, M. Radhakrishnan, who gave away awards to the best teachers, honoured retired teachers and distributed prizes to the students who topped the public examinations in the district.

The Minister said several primary schools had been opened in rural areas across the State. Several primary and middle schools in the State had been upgraded in the last few years.

Teachers had an important role to play in moulding children and ensuring that they attained a higher status in life.

Distributing prizes to the schools that had achieved 100 per cent pass percentage in the public examinations, the Collector, Jatindranath Swain, said infrastructure such as drinking water and construction of additional classrooms were being provided to several schools.

Forty-seven primary schools had been upgraded to middle school level. For education-related works, Rs. 10 crores had been spent since 2001.

MLAs C. Vijayabhaskar and Arasan, representatives of the local bodies and officials from the Education Department participated.
