Rashtrapati Bhavan's gardener, family consume poison

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, NOV. 28. In an apparent suicide-pact, a 60-year-old gardener working at Rashtrapati Bhavan allegedly consumed poison along with his wife, two daughters, son and 18-month-old grandson in the Presidential Estate servant quarters late on Saturday night. They were all rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital this morning where they are stated to be out of danger.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday when the gardener, Nanu Ram, his wife, Ashrafi Devi, daughters, Meera and Sunita, and his son, Nawal Kishore, consumed poison. They also made Nawal Kishore's son, Tarun, consume the same. Then they went to bed.

Early this morning, Nawal Kishore gained consciousness and saw the others still in an unconscious state. He immediately contacted his neighbours and narrated the whole incident to them. Subsequently, the neighbours took all of them to RML Lohia Hospital where they have been kept under observation.

Enquiries from their neighbours revealed that just four days ago, Nawal Kishore's 23-year-old wife, Ramwati, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison, following which her family levelled charges against Nanu Ram and others of having tortured her for dowry. On the basis of their complaint, the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) initiated an inquiry into the matter. The police suspect that due to these allegations, Nanu Ram and others decided to end their lives. A Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman said Nanu Ram's family was being provided all necessary support.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Chanakyapuri police station and further investigations are on. The police are awaiting medical report for further action in the matter.
