Kandaleru water reaches Poondi reservoir

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, NOV. 28. Water from the Kandaleru reservoir reached Poondi this morning at 7, having travelled 25 km from Zero Point near Uthukottai on the Andhra Pradesh border.

The Poondi reservoir received about 200 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water by noon. The inflow into the canal at Zero Point also improved by noon, with about 320 cusecs streaming in. The initial flow into the canal near Uthukottai last evening was 43.6 cusecs.

A Public Works Department (PWD) official here said the flow into the canal at Zero Point would be stepped up to 500 cusecs by Sunday night as per the assurance from Andhra Pradesh. The canal is already receiving rainwater from the neighbouring villages and catchment areas of Andhra Pradesh and this should speed up the movement of the Kandaleru water into the canal.

Zero Point

The Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister, O. Paneerselvam and the Local Administration Minister, K.P. Anbalagan, visited Zero Point this morning to inspect the inflow, along with the PWD and Chennai Metrowater officials.

The Andhra Pradesh Minister for Major Irrigation, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, also inspected the flow from the Kandaleru reservoir. He was accompanied by the chief engineer of the Telugu Ganga Project and other officials. They visited the Poondi reservoir to inspect the flow from the Zero Point.

The reservoir has received about 10 million cubic feet of water (mcft) between 6 p.m. on Saturday (when water was released from Zero Point) and 10 a.m. this morning, a PWD official said.

The water will be allowed to collect in the reservoir for two weeks to create sufficient storage before it is supplied to the city. It will be sent to Red Hills for treatment and distribution through the Baby canal.

The officials expect a steady inflow of water for at least 50 days to meet the requirement of three thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) for the city.

About 1,000 cusecs has been released from the Kandaleru dam since Thursday, which at present has storage of 9.12 tmcft.
