Efforts on to hike stipend for the disabled: MLA

Francis Serrao, rector of the St. Aloysius College, speaking at the annual convention of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Physically Handicapped Persons' Assoication held in Mangalore on Sunday.

MANGALORE, NOV. 28. A large number of members of the Dakshina Kannada Physically Handicapped Persons' Association gathered at the St. Aloysius College Auditorium here on Sunday for the annual convention of the association held in collaboration with the Sahodaya Outreach Programme and the management of the college. Addressing the gathering, Yogish Bhat, MLA, said efforts were on to increase the stipend given by the Government to the disabled from Rs. 125 to Rs. 500. He said the authorities concerned would appeal to the Government to include more disabled persons in the list of beneficiaries who received aid. Only six such persons received aid in the district, their number should be increased to 250.

"I will take up these issues in the Legislative Assembly,'' he added. Francis Serrao, rector of the St. Aloysius College, and Shantharam Shetty, founder president of the association and orthopaedic surgeon, spoke.

Felicitated

Members of the association A.C. Rai, an employee of Vijaya Bank; Robert D' Souza of Mobility Centre for Blind; Kasturi, a visually challenged music teacher at Mangalayogi School in Vamanjoor, and Asha Fernandes, who provides free consultation at the Limbs Centre in Wenlock Hospital, were felicitated.

Eugene Lobo, principal of the St. Aloysius College; Puttaswamy, officer, Physically Handicapped Persons' Welfare Department; Murlidhar Naik, president of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts' Physically Handicapped Persons' Association, and Charles Furtado, director of the Sahodaya Outreach Programme, were present.
