BANGALORE, NOV. 28. The Cottonpet police on Saturday arrested two persons from Tamil Nadu and rescued 135 rose-ringed parakeets from them. After being alerted by members of an animal welfare organisation, the police arrested Velu (20) and Subramani (27) of Thiruchirapalli when they were allegedly selling the parakeets near a hotel on Cottonpet Main Road. The accused were reportedly charging Rs. 100 per pair of birds. The police rescued the birds from them and handed them over to the animal welfare organisation. The accused had reportedly captured the birds in Tamil Nadu forests. Poaching of rose ringed parakeets is banned under the Wild Life Protection Act, the police said.
