`Road sense'

`Road sense'

Sir, - It is learnt that the GCDA has decided to reduce the width of KMA Avenue, which runs from the southern end of Panampilly Avenue to the Passport Office, from 30 metres to 22 metres, and sell the remaining eight metres for commercial purposes. It is surprising that the GCDA is considering reducing the width of existing roads even as the authorities are finding it impossible to widen roads such as Sahodaran Aiyyappan Road, Kaloor-Kathrikadavu Road, etc. This is lack of farsightedness on the part of the authorities.

For a cleaner Kochi

Sir, - Having observed the city with diligence for over a quarter century now, I can confidently state that it has been gradually getting dingy and seedy. The steady influx of population has, noticeably and predictably, led to rise in the number of motor vehicles in the city. The number of vehicles on the city roads is too large to ensure a streamlined flow. Besides, many motorists do not follow traffic rules. This has contributed to the increase in accidents.

No measures are taken to ensure cleanliness in the city. Garbage is seen strewn indiscriminately, from Kaloor right up to Jos Junction. The authorities concerned should take steps to impose penalties and inculcate in people a higher sense of civic responsibility.

Ferry services

Sir, - Boat passengers would be aware that ferry service through the Mattancherry boat jetty has been regularised with three boats conducting services to Ernakulam since November 2002. There are regular ferry services between Mattancherry and Ernakulam from 6.40 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. on all days.

Now that the Fort Cochin Customs Boat jetty has been renovated and is ready for inauguration shortly, all ferry services between Ernakulam and Mattancherry are moving via Island Terminus Jetty and Fort Cochin Customs jetty. There are also proposals to increase the number of boats on this route to reduce the time gap in service schedules.

More than a decade-long efforts put in by the Paschima Kochi Passengers' Association with the Government to set right the two jetties have found result. It is now up to the civil society of Mattancherry to safeguard and ensure smooth operations of the ferry service by using it.
