This Day That Age
A book on Thyagaraja in English in the series, "Great composers", written by Prof. P. Sambamoorthi, was formally released at a function held under the auspices of the Triplicane Cultural Academy, Madras, on November 29. Mr. C. Subramaniam, Minister for Finance and Education, who presided, expressed the hope that more books like the present one would soon be published. Sir S. Varadachari, inaugurating the function, said that the book contained interesting and valuable information, not only for the layman but also for the professional. The author had brought home to the reader the spirit of saintliness and reverence towards God which was the guiding principle of Thyagaraja's life. Prof. Sambamoorthi said that the concept of raga was India's contribution to the world's musical thought. Thyagaraja had given us a full picture of all the major ragas and minor ragas. Sangita Kavitvam reached the acme of perfection in his hands. His numerous compositions in ragas like Arabhi and Sahana were a standing testimony to his creative genius, he said. Sri Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu, speaking in Telugu, expressed his appreciation of the book.
