UDUPI, NOV. 29. Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Admar Mutt said on Monday that it was essential to follow the ideals of the saint-composer, Kanakadasa.

Inaugurating the Kanakadasa Jayanti Utsava, organised by the Sri Krishna Mutt here, the swamiji said that there were a number of problems in the present day society. However, they could be tackled if people followed the eternal truths revealed by saint-composers such as Kanakadasa, Purandaradasa and others. These saints had given easy meaning to the complex matters propounded in the "shastras."

Kanakadasa had shown that God belonged to all people. He brought forth the deep bonding a devotee could have with the Lord. Kanakadasa had shown the virtue of patience to society. Despite all the troubles he faced, Kanakadasa never rose in revolt. He showed the power of devotion through sheer patience, he said.

Bhajans

As part of the Kanakadasa Jayanti Utsava, bhajans were being held in front of Kanaka Gudi, in front of the Kanakana Kindi and just below the Kanaka Gopuram. This should send a message of the deep devotion which Kankadasa had for Lord Krishna. Kanakadasa was a staunch "Vaishnavite." People should follow the path of Kanakadasa, the swamiji said.

Venkataramana Muchinthaya welcomed the gathering. Earlier, a procession was held at the Car Street to mark the beginning of the Utsava.

Tight security

There was tight security in the Car Street today. All four roads leading to the street were blocked by police after rumours that some leaders and members of the Kuruba community were expected to gherao the Sri Krishna Temple. No vehicles were allowed into the street, where there was heavy presence of police personnel.
