ANANTAPUR, NOV. 29. The town police today arrested a four-member gang of chain snatchers and recovered 320 grams of gold jewellery snatched from 11 victims. The police also seized a moped and a cricket stump used in the crimes. The value of the booty was estimated at about Rs. 2 lakhs. Similarly, the police also arrested one youth specialising in theft of a particular make of two-wheelers and seized 14 vehicles from him. The value of the two-wheelers was estimated at Rs. 6 lakhs. Giving the details to newspersons here the Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, said Jayaraj, V. Mohan Vinaykumar, S. Mahabub Basha and S. Chand Basha were involved in 11 chain-snatching cases in Anantapur from July to November this year. All were aged about 20 years. Of them, only Jayaraj was the chain snatcher and the remaining three assisted him in the crime by acting as drivers of a moped belonging to the former, which was used in all the crimes. However, all the three who assisted Jayaraj in his crime were not known to each other. Explaining his modus operandi Jayaraj told newspersons that he used to choose extension areas of the town and committed all his crimes during lunch hours (around 1.30 pm) or in the night (8 pm), when the movement of people would be less. After finding the prey, women going lonely by walk, he would hit on the backside of victim's head with a made-to-order cricket stump (very strong, heavy and short in length) and once the victim would fall on the ground he would snatch gold jewellery on the neck and would flee on the moped.
School dropouts
All the four were school dropouts of Anantapur town and their families were in financial problems. The SP complimented the police special party led by the Anantapur DSP, G. Vijaykumar, and Two Town Inspector, M. John Manohar. Meanwhile, S. Bhaskarachary (23) alias of Yadiki in the district was arrested for theft of 13 motorcycles from Bellary and one in Anantapur town. Explaining his modus operandi he, a two-wheeler mechanic himself, stated that he would go round small by-lanes between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and would look for two-wheelers parked without locking the handle. He would decamp with such vehicles by starting them with duplicate ignition keys. He would keep such vehicles in the paid parking lots of railway stations and bus stations for a couple of days and would dispose them off for Rs. 8,000 to 10,000 each with the help of known two-wheeler mechanics.
