Police to go on a `sharing' mode

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, NOV. 29. The district police would come up with a comprehensive crime prevention policy soon, the Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, said here today. The campaign, aimed at taking the police to the people, would be launched in December.

Talking to newspersons here today he said the police would try to get closer to the people by sharing information with them. Detection of crime without the cooperation of the people would not be effective, he said.

The police would make regular visits to the villages and make night halts in between. He assured the people that there would be no harassment, if they shared information on crime with the police.

Call up any time

A plan was also being prepared to popularise telephone numbers of police stations and cell phone numbers of police officers so that people could pass on the information easily. Wall writings, stickers on autos, etc would be used to popularise these numbers.

Against the recommended police-population ratio of 1:136, it was 1:1,552 in Anantapur district. There were about 70 vacancies for constables, which would be filled soon. Besides, the Government was also requested to sanction an additional SP post at Hindupur and another police sub-division at either Kalyanadurg or Rayadurg.

New police station

If sanctioned, the Additional SP at Hindupur would oversee the functioning of Penukonda, Kadiri, Dharmavaram and Kalyanadurg sub-divisions. Anantapur, Tadipatri and Guntakal sub-divisions would be supervised from Anantapur.

A new police station was also proposed for Anantapur town as the population had increased significantly and the existing two police stations were unable to cope with the work pressure.
