Abhijeet hurt in road accident

Udupi Nov. 29. The Kannada film actor, Abhijeet, and three others suffered minor injuries in a collision between a KSRTC bus and a car at Guddeangady in Karkala Rural police station limits on Monday. According to the Karkala Rural police, Abhijeet and others were travelling by car from Hebri to Karkala, while the KSRTC bus was going to Kundapur from Dharmasthala. Abhijeet, the driver of the car, and two other occupants of the car suffered minor injuries. The injured have been admitted to a private hospital at Karkala, the police said.

Call to researchers

Manipal Nov. 29. The Dean of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), R.S.P. Rao, on Monday said that the challenge before researchers was to come up with drugs tailor-made to match the genetic profiles of individuals. He was speaking after inaugurating the National Workshop in Pharmacogenomics, organised by the Life Science Centre, Department of Biotechnology, KMC, here. Prof. Rao said that by 2005, the entire human genome project would be completed. As a result, the subject of biotechnology had come up in a big way. Pharmacogenomics was also a new discipline, which held a lot of promise. He said that a time would come when doctors would have to take into account not just the age and weight but also the genetic make-up of patients.

Dacoits target petrol stations

Belgaum Nov. 29. A gang of dacoits targeted two petrol stations on National Highway 4 (Pune-Bangalore Highway) killing one person and escaped with the cash. According to the police, the 10-member gang attacked a petrol station on the highway, 13 km from Nippani town late on Sunday night. They attacked the masons working there with weapons and injured them before escaping with Rs. 40,000 from the attender at the station. Later, the police rushed to the spot and as they were making arrangements to shift the injured to hospital one of the injured persons died. He was identified as Vidhyadhar Bhobhe (22). Later, the same gang attacked another petrol station a few km. away and looted Rs.1,100 from the attender. In a separate incident on Saturday night, a group looted Rs. 40,000 from the crew of a lorry when the latter were attending to a problem in the vehicle, near Gandhi Nagar. The police have registered cases.
