U.P. cops want unified police range to contain naxalism

LUCKNOW, NOV. 29. Police officials in Uttar Pradesh want the state government to put the three naxalite infested districts under the jurisdiction of a single police range for dealing with the menace.

On November 20, a blast allegedly triggered by naxalites had killed 15 Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and police personnel in Chandauli district.

The state police have identified Mirzapur, Sonebhadra and Chandauli districts as most affected by naxal activities. While Chandauli falls under Varanasi (police) Range, Sonebhadra falls under Mirzapur Range.

Police have suggested bringing Chandauli under the jurisdiction of Mirzapur range to help the top brass co-ordinate operations against left wing extremists.

Officials claimed by doing so, they would also be able to produce better intelligence in the region. There have been reports of poor intelligence network in the area.

Top police officials have been quoted claiming that a system of `day-to-day' intelligence was required to effectively check the activities of naxalites in the region.

The state government, meanwhile, was studying a report submitted by DGP V K B Nair to curb naxalism in UP. The 12 recommendations in the report refers to a socio-economic mechanism to wean away locals from assisting the extremists.

The Chandauli district police recently arrested Sanjay Kole, Ramchander, Vijaymal Kole, Rajendra Kole, Lalchand and Kamlesh in connection with the November 20 attack. Of this, Ramchander died in police custody on November 25.
